Jiahong (Joshua) Zhao is a passionate researcher, teacher and engineer born in China. After five years' work designing control and embedded systems in three well-known companies in different industries, he migrated to Australia to pursue a PhD degree and continue his research. His current interests lie in microphone array signal processing, spatial audio, machine learning and computer vision, with a few cross-disciplinary projects being progressed collaborating with academics, musicians and educators of diverse cultures.
When first coming to Australia as an international student, he had many talks with the fellow freshmen, answering questions about various aspects of Chinese culture and also discussing the common problem of English communication with local people. Possessing the passion in language learning and teaching, he started tutoring PTE Academic, a globally recognised English test equivalent to IELTS and TOFEL, after achieving full marks in three out of four PTE subjects.
By helping the non-native students to obtain high marks in the PTE test, he gains lots of teaching experiences and is highly evaluated. He also observes that the pass in a language test is only a start point, and they need to acquire the cultural background to communicate in a local manner. Therefore, the localisation of communication is involved bidirectionally in his spare time to assist with the understanding between Chinese culture and others.
